Online Writing Course How to Sell What You Write Course Objectives: Whether you write (or want to write) novels, magazine articles, marketing collateral, greeting cards, children’s books, scripts for business DVDs or Hollywood movies, you need to sell what you write. This course will help you jump start your full-time or part-time writing career, develop a laser-focused marketing plan, and teach you new ways to make money as a writer. Course Text: The Freelance Writer's Bible by David Trottier. Course start date: Wednesday, March 14, 2012 Requirements: All you need is Internet access. If you're reading this, you qualify. There are no prerequisites for the course.
Reading: Pages 3-84. Homework Assignment #1: Create a mission statement using the worksheets on pages 21-23. Submit the mission statement. Homework Assignment #2: In two paragraphs, name your #1 fear and how you overcame it or will overcome it. This assignment is for your own use, and is not to be submitted. WEEK 2 (March 21) – Explore 17 Major Writing Markets Reading: Pages 87-192. Homework Assignment: In three brief paragraphs, name the three writing areas that you are most interested in and why. Submit the paragraphs WEEK 3 (March 28) – Create a Strategic Marketing Plan anD Plan for Success. Reading: Pages 195-248 and this article. Homework Assignment #1: Identify one major goal and about 4 or 5 milestones, using the guidance and forms found on pages 200-209. Do not submit this assignment. It is for your own use. Homework Assignment #2: Create a project plan using the worksheets on pages 216-219. Do not submit this assignment. It is for your own use. Homework Assignment #3: Create an action plan using the worksheet on pages 220-221. Submit the action plan.
Communication: We will have three means of communication: 1) A classroom where we will meet as a group for one hour every Wednesday to discuss your writing issues; these are mainly question-and-answer sessions. Sessions will begin on March 14 at 8:00 p.m. Mountain Time. That's 7:00 p.m. Pacific time; 10:00 p.m. Eastern Time. 2) A message board where you can post comments and ask questions. I will check in periodically to respond. 3) E-mail for sending homework and asking personal questions.
